The SHRIMP U–Pb zircon dating of the metamorphic rims of the Gubaoquan eclogite yields an age 466 ± 27 Ma. Eclogite genesis might have been by residue formation associated with the dehydration and partial melting of a protolith consisting of variably mixed, subducted ocean floor basalt and sediment. Kaalvallei Group II eclogite xenoliths are likely to have formed through crystallization of small-volume melts within conduits in old, enriched subcontinental lithosphere. coronitic eclogite (lower) to eclogite mylonite (upper). The corona textures are gradually destroyed as the strong, planar, mylonitic fabric developed (Loc.

Blueschist Blueschist is a regional metamorphic rock formed under high-pressure (HP) low-temperature (LT) conditions. It is formed in the subduction zone environment with low geothermal gradients (4-14°C km-1) and is characterized by the presence of HP/LT index minerals like glaucophane, lawsonite, aragonite, jadeite, and deerite (Fig.1). Note that diagenesis and weathering are also a changes in form that occur in rocks. A metamorphic facies is a set of mineral assemblages in metamorphic rocks formed under similar pressures and temperatures.

Geochemical signatures for eclogite protolith from the Maksyutov Complex, South Urals N.I. Volkova*, A.E. Frenkel, V.I. Budanov, G.G. Lepezin Institute of Mineralogy Eclogite. Eclogite: A high P/T metamorphic rock composed of more than 75% vol. garnet (often pyrope or Mg-rich almandine) and omphacite (Na-Ca-Al-Mg clinopyroxene). Both must be present and neither component more than 75% vol. Eclogite never contains plagioclase. Rutile, kyanite, and quartz are typically present.

The δ18O values and the reconstructed whole-rock trace element compositions indicate an oceanic crustal protolith for mantle eclogite xenoliths. printing (Fig. 2a). The protolith is low-K basalt in composition and exhibits geochemical characters of normal-type MORB (N-MORB) affinity (Song et al. 2006).We named itbasaltic eclogite. Inthis eclogite, omphacite is equigranular, relatively small in size and chemically homogeneous; garnet occurs as por-phyroblasts uniformly distributed in In the Seve Nappe Complex of the Swedish Caledonides, coronitic diabases pass into eclogites; sometimes the transition occurs within one and the same boudin. Calculated pressure-temperature conditions for the eclogite facies stage are 20-27 kbar and 650-750°.

Despite initially the eclogite facies was initially recognized in rocks only of basaltic composition, it is now known that protoliths other than basalt also can be metamorphosed to pressures and temperatures characteristic of the eclogite facies, and a wide variety of mineral assemblages can be stable at these conditions, including several hydrous mineral phases. If one adopts MORB as the protolith of eclogite it will be particularly dense because of its high SiO 2 (stishovite) content compared to other mafic protoliths, such as cumulates, restites, delaminated continental crust and the average composition of oceanic crust. Subduction-related eclogites are products of their igneous, metamorphic, fluid-rock, and tectonic histories. Changes of bulk rock chemistry, mineral assemblages and compositions, as well as microstructures operate in concert both before and during subduction to transmogrify ocean floor basalt into subduction zone eclogite.

The zeolite facies was first described from southern New Zealand, but similar rocks … Eclogite contains no plagioclase although its protolith is full of this mineral. The protoliths of eclogites are igneous rocks with a basaltic composition (basalt, diabase , gabbro ). The lack of relatively light-weight plagioclase is the reason why it is so dense compared to its protoliths. The eclogite unit occurs in the LHS below the MCT, and the protolith is considered to be 110–88-Ma-old (cretaceous volcanics in the LHS). The peak metamorphic condition was estimated as P > 15 kb (probably up to 20 kb) for a minimum temperature of 580°C ( Groppo et al., 2007 ).

An unusually dense rock, eclogite can play an important role in driving convection within the solid Earth. Variation diagrams enable us identify the crystallization sequence of the plutonic protolith, itself a function of the original tectonic setting. For example, the Borehole contains a thick, eclogite-facies cumulate sequence which we can reconstruct in detail as a layered complex containing cumulate dunite and peridotite, mela-troctolite, troctolite, gabbro, ferrogabbro, ferrodiorite, quartz-diorite and tonalite.
